Beloved Disneyland worker hits milestone of 55 years & Happy New Years Eve.

Oscar Martinez, 76, has worked for Disneyland for 55 years, becoming the first Disney employee to hold that distinction.

Martinez is never without a warm smile as he greets customers at Disneyland's Carnation Café,
"I always smile, no matter what. I got bad days, you know? But I always smile through them," said Martinez.
Visitors to the park love interacting with Oscar, a fixture at Disneyland.
"This is one of the reasons I come to Disneyland right here, because he is a cool guy. I come to breakfast every time I come here," said Colorado resident Christina Anderson. "I love coming to see Oscar."
Martinez said being recognized for his work means a lot to him because he's met many people from all over the world.
Surprisingly, Martinez had never set foot in a restaurant before he started working at the Carnation Café as a bus boy in the days when he would often see Walt Disney in the park. He admits he was too shy to talk with him.
He says his first year was challenging. Martinez, who grew up on farms in Texas and Arkansas, wasn't used to crowds.

"Oh my god, so many people. On Main Street, you can hardly walk, and I say to myself, 'What am I doing here?" Martinez said.
Working most of his years as a chef, he has two dishes named after him. He has also trained countless employees, including his present-day boss Matt Gray, who started in 1989.
"Charming, honest, full of humor," described Gray, the General Manager of Food and Beverage at Disneyland.
Martinez now serves as the official Carnation Café Ambassador. He says his retirement will depend on the health of his wife, who is battling cancer.

Martinez said he takes it day by day, always with a smile on his face.
A few years ago, Martinez overcame a battle with cancer himself. He and his wife, Shirley Ann, have been married for over 50 years.

Also be sure "TDDF" fans to have a fun and SAFE New Years Eve!

Bambi Added to the National Film Registry!

Each year the National Film Registry from the Library of Congress selects twenty-five films to be preserved for posterity. This year Disney’s 1942 animated classic based off Felix Salten’s novel was added: Bambi and Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull’s 1972 film A Computer Animated Hand, one of the earliest 3D animation films. The film is one minute long and goes through a hand’s movements, later it was incorporated into the 1976 film Futureworld. These were the only animated films added this year, but we can presume the future will see many more added the national archive. For a complete list, visit The Hollywood Reporter.

Disney Plans New Year's Eve Announcement!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. --Disney has added its own hype to the New Year.
Disney plans to air its “One More Disney Day” announcement Dec. 31 on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” on ABC and “Univision Television Feliz 2012” hosted by Don Fransisco for Spanish speakers.
Recently, Disney launched a website with a countdown saying that "Disney Parks will be celebrating like never before!"
Disney alluded to this earlier in December in the news section of its website.
“From exciting seasonal events and brand-new attractions to immersive new experiences and a special surprise announcement on New Year's Eve…there's a lot more than just Leap Year to celebrate throughout Walt Disney World® Resort in 2012,” the website says.
Disney fans are wondering what the surprise could be. Inside the Magic, an unofficial Disney news blog, links the announcement with previous year-long promotions that Disney has done -- including a free pass on your birthday in 2009 and one for volunteering your time in 2010's "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" promotion -- and speculates that it will be in connection with 2012's Feb. 29.

Disney’s Snow Queen still happening after all?

Over the years, there have been various stories about Disney trying to get a movie based off of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Snow Queen off the ground, but in one way or another, the project has always found itself back in limbo. But that may have finally changed .Cinema Blend is reporting that Disney is in fact moving forward with the film, giving it the new title Frozen and setting it up for a Thanksgiving 2013 release date.
It’s unknown what format the animation would be done in–or if this is even true. But if there is any truth behind these reports, it will probably be seen as exciting news for most Disney fans.

New Posters for THE AVENGERS

New posters have gone online for The Avengers. Disney/Marvel seems to be taking a page from Warner Bros’ Harry Potter playbook by churning out as many character posters as possible between now and the arrival of the movie.  We’ve already seen the character banners, but now Marvel is disassembling these banners into individual posters.
The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012

Braves and Disney having a Trademark Spat & Tervis.com Muppet travel mugs!

The Atlanta Braves and Disney are supposed to be good friends, but apparently even friends can have disagreements once in a while. The dispute is over the use of the word Brave as the title of Disney's latest Pixar animated film. Here is the blog Stitch Kingdom with the explanation:

*the Atlanta National League Baseball Club, owners of the Atlanta Braves, formally filed an objection to many of the trademark applications. Although trademarks are specific to their singular and plural forms and the Braves do not possess any trademarks for the word BRAVE (only BRAVES), the organization believes that damages will occur as a result of Disney’s trademarks being approved as they have used the singular form before on items such as clothing and insist it is common for fans, media, et al to use the singular form when referring to a single player, whereas the pluralized form refers to the entire team.*

Interesting. So the Braves think that an animated children's film would cause damage to their brand? Okay.
Trademarks are tricky things, so maybe this is just the Braves having to go through the normal motions that it would with any commercial use of its name. Still, funny business, especially since these two companies are partners in the Braves spring training complex.

And still looking for that LAST min. christmas gift? Well tervis.com has a few Muppet travel mugs HERE. Or you can buy them at your local bed bath & beyond store. Take a look!

Jack with The Grinch???

Just looked fun for a post here on "TDDF" to share around Christmas time!

40 fun facts for Disney World's 40th anniversary!

It's been 40 years since Disney World opened and turned Orlando into one of the world's most visited destinations. Sure, the long lines are a punch line. And all Disney magic comes with a price tag. But all 17.2 million people who pass annually through the Magic Kingdom can't be wrong.
So we tip our mouse ears to Disney with one fact for each year of its existence.
1. Walt Disney bought the 43 square miles of Central Florida swampland for Disney World for $5 million, or about $185 an acre.
2. Walt Disney died of complications of lung cancer on Dec. 15, 1966, before the first shovel of dirt was moved on construction of Disney World.
3. 10,000. That was the number of people in attendance for Disney World's soft opening on Oct. 1, 1971. But the grand opening later that month — which included performances by Julie Andrews, Bob Hope and Glen Campbell — was televised nationally. Today, the Magic Kingdom alone averages about 47,000 visitors a day.
4. Disney World has closed three times, all in anticipation of hurricanes: Sept. 15, 1999, for Floyd; Sept. 4-5, 2004, for Frances; and Sept. 26 of that same year for Jeanne.
5. It took less than 30 minutes to evacuate thousands of guests from the theme parks on Sept. 11, 2001.
6. After the Sept. 11 attacks, the Federal Aviation Administration put a flight restriction over the Disney World resort. It extends out in a three-mile radius from Cinderella's Castle and up to 3,000 feet.
7. An estimated 1.65 million pairs of eyeglasses have made their way to Disney World's lost-and-found bins since 1971. Every year, the park finds an average of 6,000 cellphones, 3,500 digital cameras and 18,000 hats.
8. Wondering about the weirdest things ever found? How about a glass eye, a prosthetic leg and a potty trainer — all of which were claimed.
9. A married couple from Boynton Beach, Fla., Alex and Donna Voutsinas, realized years later that they were coincidentally photographed together at Disney as children.
10. The Walt Disney World resort is about the size of San Francisco, and only about 35 percent of its more than 27,000 acres has been developed.
11. Mickey has more than 290 outfits, from a scuba suit to a lighted tuxedo. Minnie? She has more than 200, from cheerleading attire to evening gowns.
12. Stretched end-to-end, the hats with Mickey ears sold at Disney World would span about 175 miles.
13. Cinderella's Castle is made out of fiberglass, and it stands 189 feet tall.
14. Disney World's biggest theme park, Animal Kingdom, encompasses 403 acres.
15. The latest creatures at the Animal Kingdom are the blue people of "Avatar." A new section, with interactive 3-D rides, is planned to open between 2015 and 2016 at a cost of about $400 million.
16. The Animal Kingdom features more than 3,000 species in its 4 million trees and plants.
17. Inside the upper levels of Cinderella's Castle is an apartment that Walt Disney intended to use when he and his family were in Florida. It was left unfinished when he died, until Disney announced in 2006 that it would be turned into a deluxe suite, which is awarded randomly to a family every day. It comes complete with 24-karat gold tile floors and a "magic mirror" that turns into a television.
18. The Land ride at Epcot isn't just for entertainment. More than 30 tons of fruit and vegetables are grown there every year for Disney restaurants.
19. If you were to stay in a different room every night at the Disney World resorts, to sleep in them all would take you 68 years.
20. More than 500 of the young trees around Disney World properties started out as acorns from the "Liberty Oak," the focal point in Liberty Square in the Magic Kingdom.
21. Disney World employs more than 62,000 as part of its "cast," making Walt Disney World the largest single-site employer in the United States.
22. What does Epcot mean? Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
23. How did Epcot work out? As envisioned, it would be a working community of about 20,000 people, who would live with futuristic "push-button" technology in their daily lives. But after Walt Disney's death in 1966, brother Roy O. Disney scaled back the social experiment into a world's fair with a vision into "tomorrow."
24. The original idea for Epcot did come to fruition, in a way. Disney built the town of Celebration, which at the 2010 census housed about 7,500 people. The town, which was constructed beginning in 1996, used to be operated by Disney but is now mostly autonomous.
25. It's the late voice actor Jack Wagner you hear telling you to stand clear of the doors on the Disney World monorail. You can also hear his recording aboard the tram at the Orlando International Airport.
26. Disney's infrastructure has more than 270 buses, making it the third-largest bus system in the state, behind Jacksonville and Miami.
27. The newest roller coaster at any of the Disney World parks, Expedition Everest at the Animal Kingdom (aka the Yeti ride) is the tallest of any of the parks' at just a shade under 200 feet. Space Mountain at 180 feet is puny by comparison.
28. Ever notice the water tower wearing the giant Mickey ears at Disney's Hollywood Studios? If you made actual Mickey ears for it, the "Earffel Tower" would wear a size 342¾.
29. There's only one harpist at the Disney World Parks. You can hear him nightly, over dinner at Victoria & Albert's, the restaurant at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
30. If you look closely at the mosaic mural on the fourth-floor lobby of Disney's Contemporary Resort, you can see a five-legged goat facing the monorail track.
31. Disney World decorates more than 1,500 Christmas trees at holiday time.
32. There are more than 81 holes of golf on five courses on the property.
33. If you dress up folks in all the shirts sold at Disney World in one year, you'd have enough for every resident of the state of Montana (pop. 974,989.)
34. When Disney World opened, adult admission to the Magic Kingdom cost $3.50. Today it costs $85.
35. In 1976, 50 replicas of the Liberty Bell were made out of the original's cast, and one was donated to each state. Since Philadelphia had the original, it agreed to give its replica to Disney, making Florida the only state with two replica bells. (The other Florida replica is in Melbourne.)
36. Before it became strictly a theme park, Disney's Hollywood Studios (originally called Disney-MGM studios before a legal falling out) was designed to be a working studio.
37. The first film made at Disney's Hollywood Studios was "Ernest Saves Christmas."
38. Television shows were filmed at Disney's Hollywood Studios, too. "The Mickey Mouse Club" featured soon-to-be stars Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Christina Aguilera. No shows are filmed there today.
39. Jane Eisner, wife of former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, came up with the "I'm going to Disney World!" campaign, Michael Eisner wrote in his 1998 memoir.
40. Disney World flew its flags at half-staff on the day Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died. Jobs was Disney's largest single shareholder (7 percent), and he was on the board of directors.

Studebaker Museum needs money to restore Muppet movie artifact

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A piece of Muppet history is sitting in South Bend, in need of a helping hand.
The Muppets have recently returned to the silver screen, but an important piece of their first movie is sitting at the Studebaker Museum.
The Museum is hoping for a little help to get it back into shape.
Fozzie Bear and Kermit the Frog hit the road in the original Muppet Movie in a quest to make it to Hollywood.
Their road trip took place in a 1951 Bullet Nose Commander, made by Studebaker.
According to Fozzie, his uncle let him borrow the car for an adventure that took the Muppets across the United States.
It even landed the car a new paint job along the way.
Once the movie faded from the limelight, Fozzie's famous Studebaker sat on a backlot for awhile until it made its way to the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Ind.
Jo McCoy with the Studebaker Museum said it is still equipped with a little Hollywood magic.
"You can see where they set the steering up from the back, so visually it looked like Fozzie Bear was driving and then the puppeteer back here drove the vehicle  and had a video camera that was in the bullet nose to see where it was going," said McCoy.
Much of its Hollywood shine has worn off, and the museum is trying to raise money. $40,000 is need to restore the car.
McCoy also said that the car is one of South Bend's best kept secrets and they are a  long way off from getting it back to its heyday.
For now, the museum is going to just keep moving right along, hoping the new movie will bring this old car some much-needed attention.
There were actually two Studebakers used in the film. The modified one and the one that actually ran normally was used for the wide-open road shots.

ComingSoon.net's Frankenweenie set visit & This week on D23's Disney Geek!

Check out these new photos from ComingSoon.net's Frankenweenie set visit.

"It was nearly three decades ago that a young filmmaker wrote, directed and produced a darkly comical short film take on Mary Shelley's legendary monster. Starring a bull terrier named Sparky, brought back from the dead by a suburban boy named Victor Frankenstein, the 30 minute short was so unusual that it didn't see an official release for years.

Today, that filmmaker is a household name and his gothic charm a quintessential element of more than a dozen full-length features. That's why Tim Burton fans should be very pleased to know that in 2012, Frankenweenie is getting reanimated in more ways than one.

Set for release on October 5th, the Frankenweenie feaure expands on the short and makes use of black and white stop-motion 3D photography, similar to Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and his 1982 short, "Vincent.""

Disney Introduces Sofia, The First Pre-School Princess!

After the success that Disney's found with their traditionally animated TV series Jake and the Never Land Pirates on Disney Channel this year, it only makes sense that they'd want to repeat the formula with a different theme.CinemaBlend is reporting that Disney has a princess show in production, featuring a brand new character, Sofia, who is a little kid. She'll be introduced in a movie before the series is launched on television later on. Disney, of course, makes billions of dollars off of their Princess merchandise, so it seems very likely that Sofia dolls will be seen on store shelves sometime in the near future

Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure Coming to Xbox 360 in March 2012

Microsoft has announced Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure is coming to Xbox 360 on March 20, 2012 with an SRP of $49.99.
The new Kinect exclusive title continues the relationship between Disney and Microsoft that delivered Disneyland Kinect Adventures to Xbox 360 last month. Rather than focus on Disney characters, this new game delves into the world of Pixar.

Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure will draw from five Pixar films including Toy Story, Up!, Ratatouille, Cars and The Incredibles. Additional details are sketchy right now, but the teaser trailer below suggests a lot of throwing and skiing is involved. I'd wager it plays a lot like the attractions portion of Disneyland Kinect Adventures judging by the quick snippet of footage.
Microsoft had been calling this new game simply Rush before this Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure announcement.

Jennifer Hudson, Cee Lo Green, The Muppets and More Highlight Walt Disney World Resort Taping of ‘Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade’ TV Special for ABC!

Last Friday and Saturday, the Magic Kingdom Park wished upon more than a few stars, as some of the top names in entertainment taped performance segments for the “Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade” that will air December 25 on ABC-TV in the U.S., in Canada on the CBC network and in 177 countries around the globe on the American Forces Network (AFN).

Last month, Disney Parks Blog author George Savvas recapped the tapings that took place at Disneyland Resort for the holiday special. With the Walt Disney World Resort tapings now complete, we only have a few weeks to wait until the show is wrapped in a bow and presented to viewers on Christmas Day.

Everyone’s favorite balcony-sitting curmudgeons, Statler and Waldorf, make a special appearance on the telecast at the Magic Kingdom Park. They will be perched high above Main Street, U.S.A., offering their unique brand of commentary on the parade below.

Kermit the Frog wore his holiday best scarf for the occasion, and remarked that he loves to vacation in Central Florida not only to visit
Walt Disney World Resort, but also to visit some of the best swamps he’s ever seen. Here, he poses during the taping with Disney Channel stars Bella Thorne and Zendaya — from hit show “Shake It Up” — who perform a high-energy dance number during the TV special.

You can read more HERE.
